EWM Yard Management: Check-In, Yard Bin, Door Assignment and Check-Out

Before goods are unloaded, the truck itself is managed: it is checked in at the gate as a transportation unit, parked in a yard bin while the doors are busy, moved to a free door, unloaded and received, then checked out.

Demo data

01Check-in at the gate

The truck arrives; the gate keeper checks it in. Transportation unit TU-0000801 is linked to inbound delivery 180000900.

Business scenario

A supplier truck with 100 EA of RM-1000 arrives at 08:00. All inbound doors are busy until 09:30.

All companies, numbers and documents are fictional demo data.

Step-by-step flow

  1. 01

Check-in at the gate open in twin

The truck arrives; the gate keeper checks it in. Transportation unit TU-0000801 is linked to inbound delivery 180000900.

From now on the warehouse can see the truck, its deliveries and how long it waits.

  2. 02

All doors are busy open in twin

No inbound door is free until 09:30. Where does the truck go?

The system knows exactly which truck is where.

  3. 03

Invisible waiting trucks open in twin

Trucks queuing outside are invisible to the system: no planned door assignment, no waiting-time record, and blocked public roads.

Demurrage charges and missed slots usually start here.

  4. 04

Park in the yard open in twin

A yard movement places TU-0000801 in yard bin YARD-01.

Supervisors see the yard in the warehouse monitor.

  5. 05

Move to door 01 and unload open in twin

At 09:30 door 01 is free. The TU docks, is unloaded, and goods receipt is posted: +100 EA.

From here the inbound process continues as usual (putaway).

  6. 06

    Check-out open in twin

The empty truck leaves through the checkpoint; the TU is checked out with its times recorded.

Arrival, waiting, docking and departure times are available for carrier and door performance analysis.

  7. 07

Yard visit complete open in twin

    Check-in → yard → door → unload → check-out.

Yard management connects transportation with warehouse operations.

Differences by SAP version

Classic WM had no yard management.

Configuration

  • Yard as storage type

    Configuration dependent

Yard bins are bins of a storage type with role 'yard'.

  • Shipping and receiving with TUs

    Configuration dependent

Whether deliveries are assigned to TUs and door times scheduled.

Prerequisites

  • Yard storage type and yard bins
  • Checkpoints and doors
  • Means of transport and packaging material for TUs

Likely causes: Door blocked by another TU; Door not allowed for the means of transport

Where to look: Door status in the monitor

Troubleshooting

Something went wrong? Work through these checks in order. They are diagnostic questions, not configuration instructions — confirm changes with your system owner.

  1. CHECK 1

    Yard

    • TU checked in?
    • Yard bin free?
    • Door free and allowed?

Interview questions

  • What is a transportation unit in EWM?

The smallest loadable unit of a vehicle (e.g. a truck or trailer) as seen by the warehouse. Deliveries are assigned to it; it is checked in and out at checkpoints, moved through yard bins and docked at doors, recording times along the way.
