Collective Orders: Assembly and Sub-Assembly Produced Together without Intermediate Stock

A multi-level product is produced as one collective order: the sub-assembly's order is linked to the assembly's order, both are scheduled together, and the sub-assembly goes straight into the assembly — no goods receipt or goods issue for it at all.

Demo data

01Create the collective order

Leading order 1000070 for FG-5000; its component SFG-5100 is directly produced, so subordinate order 1000071 is created and linked.

Business scenario

10 conveyor units FG-5000 each need one drive unit SFG-5100, built from 2 EA of RM-1000. The drive units are made only for these conveyors (special procurement: direct production).

All companies, numbers and documents are fictional demo data.

Step-by-step flow

  1. 01

Create the collective order open in twin

Leading order 1000070 for FG-5000; its component SFG-5100 is directly produced, so subordinate order 1000071 is created and linked.

Both levels are scheduled together: the drive units finish exactly when the conveyor line needs them.

  2. 02

Build the drive units open in twin

20 EA of RM-1000 issued to 1000071 (261); 10 drive units built on line ASSY-02.

Its costs collect on it like any order.

  3. 03

Drive units are finished open in twin

The 10 drive units go to the conveyor line. Do you post a 101 for SFG-5100 and a 261 into the leading order?

The sub-assembly never exists as stock; it is 'consumed' by the higher order as soon as it is made.

  4. 04

Unneeded stock postings open in twin

With separate orders you would receive the drive units (101) and issue them again (261). In a collective order those postings do not exist — trying them finds nothing to receive.

Collective orders save two postings per level and keep scheduling linked; they also give less stock visibility in between.

  5. 05

Sub-assemblies go straight into assembly open in twin

SFG-5100 moves to line ASSY-01. No material document; the subordinate order's costs flow to the leading order.

The cost still arrives at the assembly, so the final product carries its full cost.

  6. 06

Assemble and receive the conveyors open in twin

10 conveyors built and received (101) at ₹4,000 each.

    Leading order: ₹30,000 sub-assembly + ₹10,000 assembly = ₹40,000; no variance in this demo.

  7. 07

Collective order complete open in twin

Two linked orders, one goods issue, one goods receipt.

Rescheduling the leading order reschedules its subordinates too.

Components for the subordinate order

Typical

Build the drive units

  • Dr Consumption — order 1000071 (GBB/VBR)₹20,000
  • Cr Inventory — raw materials (BSX)₹20,000

Standard 261 to the subordinate order.

Activity on the subordinate order

Conceptual

Build the drive units

  • Dr Order 1000071 — machine hours₹10,000
  • Cr Cost center — activity allocation₹10,000

Confirmed hours on line ASSY-02.

Cost flow from subordinate to leading order

Configuration dependent

Sub-assemblies go straight into assembly

  • Dr Order 1000070 — sub-assembly cost₹30,000
  • Cr Order 1000071 — credit₹30,000

In a collective order the subordinate order's costs are passed to the leading order (typically credited at its confirmation or settled to it). The mechanism is configuration dependent.

Activity on the leading order

Conceptual

Assemble and receive the conveyors

  • Dr Order 1000070 — machine hours₹10,000
  • Cr Cost center — activity allocation₹10,000

Confirmed hours on line ASSY-01.

Receipt of the assembly

Typical

Assemble and receive the conveyors

  • Dr Inventory — finished goods (BSX)₹40,000
  • Cr Factory output — order 1000070 (GBB/AUF)₹40,000

Standard receipt for the leading order.

Typical conceptual flow. Actual G/L accounts and posting behaviour depend on material valuation, automatic account determination and system configuration.

Movement type

  • 261GI for order (components of the subordinate order)Reversal: 262
  • 101GR for the leading orderReversal: 102

Produces multi-level products as one linked unit, scheduling sub-assemblies to the assembly and skipping intermediate stock postings.

    Typical

Direct production: the component is produced in a subordinate order of the same collective order.

  • Cost flow in collective orders

    Configuration dependent

How subordinate costs reach the leading order.

Prerequisites

  • Special procurement key 'direct production' (typically 52) on the sub-assembly
  • Order type allowing collective orders

Troubleshooting

Something went wrong? Work through these checks in order. They are diagnostic questions, not configuration instructions — confirm changes with your system owner.

  1. CHECK 1

    Structure

    • Special procurement 52 on the component?
    • Order type allows collective orders?

Interview questions

  • What is a collective order?

A set of production orders linked across BOM levels, created when components have special procurement 'direct production'. Subordinate orders produce the sub-assemblies, which pass directly into the higher order without goods receipt or issue; scheduling of all levels is linked.
