EWM Production Supply: Staging to the PSA, Consumption (261) and Receipt from Production (101)
The warehouse feeds the shop floor: a released production order creates a production material request in EWM, a staging task moves components to the production supply area, consumption is posted from there, and the finished goods come back into the warehouse through a receipt from production and putaway.

Digital twin
01Released order → material request
Order 1000001 is released. EWM creates production material request PMR-000456 for 100 EA to PSA-ASSY-01.
Business scenario
Production order 1000001 builds 100 EA of FG-2000 from 100 EA of RM-1000. Components are in rack bin RACK-01-03; the line takes them from PSA-ASSY-01. Finished goods return to bulk storage.
All companies, numbers and documents are fictional demo data.
Step-by-step flow
- 01
Released order → material request open in twin
Order 1000001 is released. EWM creates production material request PMR-000456 for 100 EA to PSA-ASSY-01.
It tells the warehouse what to stage, where and when.
- 02
Stage components to the PSA open in twin
Staging task: 100 EA from RACK-01-03 to PSA-ASSY-01. Still unrestricted stock — nothing consumed yet.
Staging makes components available at the line; ownership and value do not change.
- 03
When is the material consumed? open in twin
The components are at the PSA. When does stock actually go down?
Staged material that is not used can be returned to storage without any correction posting.
- 04
Staging is not consumption open in twin
The 100 EA are still unrestricted stock in PSA-ASSY-01. If they were never consumed, they could simply be put back.
Mixing the two up leads to stock left on the PSA that the system thinks is gone (or the reverse).
- 05
Consume from the PSA (261) open in twin
The line uses all 100 EA; 261 is posted from PSA-ASSY-01: ₹1,00,000 to the order.
The order carries the material cost; the PSA bin is now empty.
- 06
Receive finished goods from production (101) open in twin
100 EA of FG-2000 are received into GR-ZONE: ₹1,20,000 credited to the order.
The finished goods enter EWM in the receiving area, ready for putaway.
- 07
Put away the finished goods open in twin
Putaway task: GR-ZONE → BULK-01-01. Stock is now available for sale.
The ROD → AFS change makes the stock sellable (typical mapping).
- 08
Warehouse and production in step open in twin
Order → PMR → stage → consume → receive → put away.
Compare with PP Kanban, where the supply area is refilled by an empty container rather than per order.

Accounting impact
Consumption from the production supply area
TypicalConsume from the PSA (261)
- Dr Consumption — order 1000001 (GBB/VBR)₹1,00,000
- Cr Inventory — raw materials (BSX)₹1,00,000
Same posting as any 261; EWM reduces the PSA bin and inventory management posts the issue.
Goods receipt from production into the warehouse
TypicalReceive finished goods from production (101)
- Dr Inventory — finished goods (BSX)₹1,20,000
- Cr Factory output — order 1000001 (GBB/AUF)₹1,20,000
Standard receipt for an order, posted through EWM.
Typical conceptual flow. Actual G/L accounts and posting behaviour depend on material valuation, automatic account determination and system configuration.
Movement type
Supplies production lines from an EWM warehouse and receives finished goods back, with bin-level control of staging and putaway.

Differences by SAP version
Classic WM staged with transfer requirements for production.
Advanced production integration in embedded EWM; older setups stage via deliveries.
Production supply with EWM is scope dependent.
Configuration
Staging methods
TypicalPick parts (per order), release order parts (quantity for several orders) and crate parts (Kanban-like).
Production integration
Configuration dependentWhether orders create production material requests and how receipts from production are handled.
Prerequisites
- Production supply area mapped to an EWM bin
- Staging method on the component (pick parts, release order parts, crate parts)
- Advanced production integration active for the warehouse (embedded EWM, typical)
Master data
- Production supply area
- Bin and work center assignment.
- Component staging indicator
- Defines the staging method.
Organizational structure
- Warehouse EW01
- Plant 1000
- Work center ASSY-01

| /SCWM/AQUA | Stock in PSA and storage bins |
| /SCWM/ORDIM_C | Staging and putaway tasks |
Integration
- PPOrders drive staging; consumption and receipts post against the order.
- MM261 and 101 in inventory management.
Common errors
“No staging requirement in EWM”
Likely causes: Component has no staging method; PSA not determined; Order not released
Where to look: Component staging indicator · PSA determination · Order status
Troubleshooting
Something went wrong? Work through these checks in order. They are diagnostic questions, not configuration instructions — confirm changes with your system owner.
CHECK 1
Staging
- Is the order released?
- Does the component have a staging method?
- Is there stock in an allowed source bin?
Interview questions
What staging methods does EWM support for production supply?
Pick parts (staged per order), release order parts (a quantity staged for several orders, consumed as needed) and crate parts (container-based, Kanban-like replenishment).
Does staging to the PSA post consumption?
No. Staging is a bin-to-bin move inside EWM. Consumption (261) is posted when the line uses the components, manually or by backflush, from the PSA bin.
