EWM Resource Management: Queues, System-Guided Work and Task Interleaving

Instead of choosing tasks themselves, workers log on as resources and the system hands them the next warehouse order from the queues they are allowed to work. Task interleaving combines a putaway with a nearby replenishment so the forklift never drives back empty.

01FL-01 logs on as a resource

The driver logs on to the RF device as resource FL-01 (resource group: forklifts), allowed to work queues INB-PUTAWAY and REPLENISH.

Business scenario

Forklift driver FL-01 works the 'inbound putaway' and 'replenishment' queues. A pallet waits in the GR zone, and pick face PICK-02-05 needs refilling from bulk.

All companies, numbers and documents are fictional demo data.

Step-by-step flow

  1. 01

FL-01 logs on as a resource open in twin

The driver logs on to the RF device as resource FL-01 (resource group: forklifts), allowed to work queues INB-PUTAWAY and REPLENISH.

The system can then distribute work by who is allowed to do what.

  2. 02

How does FL-01 get work? open in twin

Two warehouse orders are waiting in FL-01's queues. How is the next one chosen?

Urgent work is done first and travel is minimised.

  3. 03

    Cherry-picking open in twin

Drivers choose convenient tasks; urgent ones wait, and two drivers may head for the same pallet.

Fine for small sites; in larger ones, queues and guided work keep service levels.

  4. 04

Warehouse order 1: putaway open in twin

    FL-01 receives WO-0000901: 50 EA from GR-ZONE to RACK-01-03.

ROD → AFS as in the normal inbound process.

  5. 05

    Interleaved replenishment open in twin

Near the rack, EWM gives FL-01 WO-0000902: 40 EA from BULK-01-01 to PICK-02-05, instead of an empty drive back.

Fewer empty trips: the forklift's next job starts near where the last one ended.

  6. 06

Two jobs, no empty trip open in twin

Log on → guided putaway → interleaved replenishment.

Labour management can add planned vs actual times on top.

Accounting impact

No accounting impact in the steps shown.

Typical conceptual flow. Actual G/L accounts and posting behaviour depend on material valuation, automatic account determination and system configuration.

Movement type

This flow spans several documents rather than a single movement type.

Directs warehouse workers and equipment to the right work in the right order, and combines tasks to reduce empty travel.

Differences by SAP version

Classic WM had queues only in limited form (RF queues).

Configuration

  • Queue determination

    Configuration dependent

Assigns warehouse orders to queues by activity area and process.

  • Task interleaving

    Configuration dependent

Allowed queue sequences for a resource group.

Integration

    Common errors

    • “Resource gets no work”

Likely causes: Not assigned to the queues with open orders; Queue sequence excludes them

Where to look: Resource and resource group settings · Queue determination

    Troubleshooting

Something went wrong? Work through these checks in order. They are diagnostic questions, not configuration instructions — confirm changes with your system owner.

    1. CHECK 1

      Work distribution

      • Resource assigned to queues?
      • Queue determination correct?

    Interview questions

    • What is task interleaving?

Combining warehouse orders from different queues (e.g. putaway and replenishment) for one resource so that the next task starts near where the previous one ended, reducing empty travel. It is configured per resource group and queue sequence.

    Q1 · Multiple choice

What groups warehouse orders so resources can be assigned to them?
